About

Welcome to the Research Group for Surgical Simulators Linz (ReSSL), located at the Department of Medical Technology of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria. ReSSL focuses on the development of hybrid surgical simulators.

Our mission

We develop easily accessible, realistic and effective surgical simulators for health professionals, medical scientists and medical engineers.

Our vision

We aim to improve safety for patients and professionals by providing a sophisticated technological platform for education and training in surgical procedures, and for the development and validation of new surgical techniques and instruments.

Try it · Feel it · Learn it

What we do

Hybrid surgical simulators combine the strengths of physical and virtual training. Trainees operate on patient phantoms made of artificial bones and soft tissues with realistic haptic feedback, using real surgical instruments. Tracking and sensor technology record what they do, and virtual components add what a phantom alone cannot show, such as simulated imaging or the reaction of the anatomy. This allows objective assessment and detailed debriefing after every training session.

Our work is organised in research areas, which develop the underlying methods and materials, and projects, in which we build simulators for specific surgical procedures together with scientific and medical partners. Our results are listed under publications.

If there is a way to make it better … we’ll try to find it!
